With a little digging I figured out that the Combination Cash store captured here in 1906 in flames was a wholesale and retail department store located at 88 Merchant's Row in downtown Rutland, Vermont. (It was destroyed door, but rebuilt quickly after, and was a longtime neighbor to Woolworth's.) I didn't know that when I purchased it; it's just hard to argue with the beauty of a an early photo of a building on fire, even while tragic. And for me the idea of a "Combination Cash" store aflame made the evocative image seem all the more so, as if piles of dollars were turning to ash before our eyes!
