The soft palette on this hand-dyed wood needlepoint/tapestry really does it for me, reminding me a lot of early Grenfell Mission hooked rugs--but of course it is the cat and mouse and cage that charmed the socks of me! A bit hard to tell whether that mouse is trapped in the cage or climbing up the side as if on a jungle gym, which makes me glad! (The cat though certainly looks to me to have a sort of quietly, keenly watching while waiting to pounce disposition.) What that small curl of dark brown to the left of the cage is meant to be, I'm really not sure! To my eye a very charming thing, the manner of which makes me think early 20th century, but perhaps it is older than that.
14 7/8" x 12 1/8" as mounted - stitched to fabric and pulled over a wooden stretcher, stapled on reverse. It should not be hard to pull the stitches attaching it to the fabric if desired.
