Boxers and Beggars, Aptly Battered c. Late 18th C. Papier Mache Snuff Box

Regular price $45.00

An early one, and a scarce one, the surface of which most definitely shows its age, but I've got a special weakness for images of boxers, including, or perhaps especially, very beaten-up ones! And here, in addition to the two gloved men, fists raised, at right, there's a forlorn looking man sitting on the floor, and another hunched over at left rear, who looks aiming to the steal what look to me like a couple of bags of money. Seems likely a late 18th century metaphor for topical British matters, but I'm content to take it at much patinated face value.

2 5/8" d. Lots of surface wear and patches of loss to the sepia printed mage as evident, but papier mache box itself in generally good and sturdy shape with only minor rim loss.
