This is one of a series of beautiful antique ink and watercolor charts listed today, all executed long ago by a Bessie Slater (I believe, signed on the back of one of them), for a botany class, I presume. Each one homes in on a different aspect or aspects--this one roots and stems--with eight different root types (fibrous, creeping, spindle shaped) and twelve different stem types (herbaceous, woody, erect) described and carefully illustrated in watercolor. More than ever these days, when delight in the natural world offers primary solace from the madness of humans, this and these remind one of micro and macro orders, and growth and resilience, also make me want to closely study every plant I pass--though better to resist pulling them all up to study the roots! Delicate and special feeling, better in hand, very lovely.
12 x 7 3/8, very good condition, ink and watercolor on card. The text, written in pen and ink with a fine nib, requires a bit of effort to read, but the watercolor is lush and bold, jumping of the page.
