Beautiful Antique Macah Beargrass and Cedar Bark Basket with Birds and Sun

Regular price $200.00

I have a particular love for Macah baskets of the Pacific Northwest Coast--finely woven of bear grass and cedar bark, they are some of the finest baskets in the world, especially the antique ones, like this one, which I believe dates to the first decade or so of the 20th century. The Macah developed a cottage industry of selling baskets to tourists as early as the 1860s, highly valued now. Pretty uncommon to find one with an eagle--on two opposite sides here, with a  red bird in silhouette on the others, and sun with red ring around it on the lid. This is a larger than average one, with a fantastic warm honey colored patina to the bear grass, in beautiful condition. Just the sort I search for, purchased from a serious basket collector.

5 1/2" diameter x 3 1/2" t. Very good condition, beautiful condition and patina, no slumping, etc. Just one minor split to the cedar bark rim visible with the lid off, minor and stable.
