A curious one, which photos do no justice, and which I grabbed fast, along with a second by the same maker, at the New Hampshire Antiques Show and felt--feel--like I was really lucky to get; this is a quiet but super atmospheric little gem of a painting I think, which I can't stop looking at. What exactly I'm looking at I'm not entirely sure, but I love the architecture of the space, with this lonely and not especially effective looking stove with very long pipe at the center, and what looks to be a view of a gray, tree dotted landscape, perhaps with railroad tracks running through it, at the far end. And surely out man in blue is wearing a uniform--I presume military, which the second painting by the same maker would seem to reinforce. (That one of a small cabin, with sign on the door reading 4th Sec. Co. H). Holding up a piece of paper in his hands, feels like a very solitary moment of planning and waiting to me, sheltered but cold and far from home, with just a small glimpse of blue sky. SO much better in hand.
8 5/8" x 5 3/8". Oil on waxed canvas, wrapped around wood, with that waxed surface lending it a really wonderful sort of luminance and specialness. Very good condition.
