A Present From Battle, Unusual Excellent Condition 19th C. Hand-painted Creamware Child's Mug

Regular price $195.00

A very lovely lovely one, this is a hand-painted--not transfer decorated-- child's mug, c. 1810, British I believe. One often sees children's mugs from this period bearing phrases beginning with "A Present" - i.e. "A present for a dear child" or a "A present for Thomas" or "A present from an affectionate father" but I have never seen "A Present from Battle" and can't find another out there like it anywhere. How poignant and vivid to imagine a parent returning from war with this in hand, and how lovely that carefully painted lettering surrounding by the green laurel wreath symbolizing peace, and blooming rose on the other side. In bright and crisp near mint condition, feeling very much like a present indeed (and welcome respite from present day battles on all sides.) A real beauty.

2 9/16" t x 2 1/2" in diameter; 3 3/8" across at handle. Excellent condition, no chips, cracks or other issues.
