1957 Homing / Racing Pigeon Portrait Photograph, 300 Miles

Regular price $65.00

Finding this and a second racing/homing pigeon photograph together at an estate in Gloucester, MA this weekend made me super happy--the very existence of homing pigeons makes me happy, really, with a fascinating history of service as carrier pigeons, and I think these vintage photographs are just really beautiful. I have found a few similar photos in Naval archives, but think most likely these came from the collection of a breeder. A handwritten note--enclosed in the frame but not attached to the photo--documents this pigeon's 1st place completion of two 300 mile races. The Concourse may refer to The Greater Boston Homing Pigeon Concourse, one of the oldest--est. 1928--continuously operated racing pigeon organizations in the US.

Framed, as found, in an inexpensive frame from which the photo is easily removed. Framed: 11 3/8" x 9 7/16". Photo: 9 1/2" x 7 3/8". Very good vintage condition.
