1790 Common Gordius (Hair Worm) F. P Nodder Book Plate Engraving

Regular price $15.00

This just struck me as rather poetic and wonderfully lyrical--two looping knots of worm at top and bottom, and then one outstretched across the middle. The text underneath reads London, England Nov. 1790, by F.P Nodder & Co. No. 15 Brewer Street. Frederick Polydore Nodder (1770 – c. 1800) was an English illustrator, engraver and painter, who illustrated George Shaw's periodical The Naturalist's Miscellany, which is where this bookplate came from, and converted most of Sydney Parkinson's Australian plant drawings from the Endeavor expedition into paintings and helped engrave them for publication.

9 1/16" x 5 5/16". On the reverse are lots of details about the worm! Very good antique condition with some age toning revealing how it was previously matted.
