1829-30 Penmanship Practice Notebook, in German, Presumed American

Regular price $100.00

I purchased this one especially for the layers of text and doodles on the inside covers and first and last pages, including a little Fraktur writing--yum yum--but love it front to back, including for the fact that I can't read German so the lines of penmanship practice repeated over and over become more or less just beautiful fields of line. Pretty cool too, that though in German I am confident is it American: it's author was a Johannes Knetz, but on some pages also appears as John Knetz--which together with the years (1829-1830) leads me to a Johannes/John Knetz of Hereford, Berks County, PA, 1815-1879, who I am confident is him. I really love the idea that he was living simultaneously by two names--early American bi-culturalism. And also included is a transcription of a poem by his father, Henry Knetz!

8 3/4" x 6 4/8" x 5/16. 48 pages filled front and back with thick paper cover and hand-sewn binding. Some wear to the covering and toning around the borders of the pages but overall very good (very) antique condition and holding together very well.
