Wonderfully Carved Antique Figural Pipe Bowl: Man with Prominent Nose and Lots of Hair

Regular price $135.00

Carved folk art pipes like this make me long for the days when pipe smoking was common, and also remind me of the persistent human drive to make everyday things special, and personal--though admittedly some manifestations of that drive are more exceptional than others! Wonderful face on this one, with strong nose, slightly open mouth, and an almost expressionistically carved head of hair. And with many years of use manifesting in a very rich patina, down to a near blackening of his cheeks! The wood looks to me like burl (?) and the pipe late 19th/early 20th century I believe.

3 1/4" l x 3" t overall, measured on square. 1 1/2" t at bowl x 1" diameter. Very good condition, better in hand, rich patina. Some wear and aging to the stem (which can be removed) including what looks like some chewing on the end of it!
