I started documenting this one as found, bound (with metal clips holding the pages in place) but since there was a good bit of rusting to those clips (the pages themselves are in good condition) I decided to disassemble it. For me the appeal was the dozens of hand-drawn crayon/colored pencil colored maps, often without labels, which read almost as pure abstractions, and are often really lovely just as drawings. But this is also a document of Nazi era Germany, with the first inside page, dated the day Germany annexed Austria into the German reich, translating to read: "Greater Germany – As the Führer Created It." I don't read German, but there are pages and pages of handwritten notes here, which one imagines are at least somewhat informed by Nazi era ideology being taught; nothing exists in a vacuum, and (we would do well to remember) histories rhyme.
Folio measures 9 1/2" x 6 1/2". Most pages/maps 8" x 6", but varied. Most maps (25 plus of them) but only a small selection of pages of notes documented here.
