It is a very shallow wooden slide lid box, with the long, narrow lid sliding out to reveal ten cylindrical niches, made for holding individual paint sticks\/pastels\/crayons. With a most charming naive watercolor adhered to the face of it, which looks earlier 19th century to me (I think perhaps older than the box itself) featuring a couple in hats out walking in the landscape. I know this was found in Holland, and do believe that is where it originated.  With the watercolor feeling like a window, and the box feeling like a painting with a secret compartment!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e 5\" x 2 1\/2\" x 1\/2\".
