And I am not completely certain but do not think the darker tone around the dog is due entirely to toning; rather I think perhaps a wash/fixative was applied to the paper before the drawing was executed--which has the effect now of making this feel like the Shroud of Turin of dog portraits! Very charming, in terrific gilded period frame, c. 1870s or so I would guess.

9 3/4" x 7 5/8". One stain along left edge and one small tear to the drawing 7/8ths of the way down, center-right, which pretty much disappears. At some point someone (probably the writer of the note on reverse) glued four bits of wood around the perimeter of the frame from the back, not touching the drawing but making it a bit precarious to remove, and those bits of wood would take some real work to remove. So I've just sealed it up some from the back to protect it, working around those wooden bits. Stable and safe if not professionally done! And the frame itself from the front is perfect.

https://www.criticaleyefinds.com/products/portrait-of-a-spaniel-drawn-for-annie-athelia-archer-by-her-teacher-19th-century-charcoal-in-period-gilded-frame-1
