Lots of tintype portraits out there, but this one really struck me--in part for the quality and clarity of the tintype itself, extremely sharp and crisp, and with the solid cream ground making the image feel to my eye quite contemporary in sensibility. Then there is handsome and also vulnerable looking him, with hand-tinted cheeks, a subtle shadow of stubble, and every strand of carefully combed hair crystal clear and accounted for, looking to me perhaps as if going to a dance but not with the young woman he had hoped! Seeming just on the cusp of manhood and almost as if changing from boy to man in front of our eyes; to me quite a sensitive, delicate portrait.
