George W. Gruber's Double-sided Antique Pennsylvania Fraktur Type Watercolor with Birds and Flowers

Regular price $225.00

It's quite a lucky week when I've found two fraktur watercolors--and this one double sided to boot! And I think both sides are equally good, both with birds and flowers--happily floating between two panes of glass in the frame, so that one can enjoy them both. With the reverse side signed proudly by a George W. Gruber (I believe it is Gruber)--I have found numerous Gruber's from Pennsylvania, where this was surely done, including a George W. who died in 1876 at the age of 21--which seems about right in terms of the age of this watercolor, though I don't know that's this George for certain. Watercolors like this are what live in my dreams, so rich in color and so full of life. I will be very glad to keep this one for myself.

14 1/2" x 8 11/16" framed. Paper 11 1/2" x 6". Colors richer and more beautiful than photos well convey. Clearly the paper was a two page spread from a notebook, happily kept in tact. One (roughly cut) pane of glass seems original to this frame, and the second (cleanly cut) I believe added at a later date. Neither fits the frame exactly perfectly, but one nail at top and one at bottom on the reverse side are holding them in place well.
