I love them as objects, and as vessels, and as painted surfaces, and they vary a great deal depending on when they were made and the lives they have lived. This is I believe the earliest example I have found, with a carved, tapered stem, unusual, and the thin ribs from being turned on a lathe subtly visible through the very soft red and yellow paint. It has clearly lived a life, as I've documented all the way around, but of course I find it all the more beautiful for it. These were made in Japan for the Western market, beginning in the late 19th century/1900 or so I believe, and I believe this one is about that old, with a stamp on the underside of the lid that looks to me to read "Patent."

4 3/4" t x 4" d. Lots of wear as evident, including a few rough patches as documented, and a small hairline split to the underside, minor and only visible when flipped over. This one is very much for a lover of patina.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0015/5022/1382/files/IMG_3956_f33a3d0c-b705-44e7-878c-ca377c55c799.jpg?v=1761405279
