It was written in 1843 by German, Frankfurt-based physician Heinrich Hoffmann--as the story goes as a Christmas present for his three-year-old son because he was unhappy with the boring, overly didactic children's books available at the time; published in 1845, and translated into English in 1848, it went on to become hugely influential, awakening the imaginations (and perhaps haunting the dreams!) of children worldwide. \u003cmeta charset=\"utf-8\"\u003eThe book contains ten short stories\u003cspan\u003e, each detailing exaggerated, often gruesome punishments or fates for common misbehavior. (As a young girl very much attached to sucking my left thumb, I remember being read \u003cmeta charset=\"utf-8\"\u003e\n\u003cem class=\"zhvwWe\"\u003eConrad Suck-a-Thumb, about\u003c\/em\u003e a boy whose refusal to overcome the habit lead to the  chopping off of his thumbs by a traveling tailor with giant scissors; this promptly put an end to my own habit.)\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eIt's always a delight to come across a 19th century copy--this one a 33rd edition, dating it to 1885-90 or so--but this one, to my sensibilities, is especially special as a specific object. Long ago, a young Miss Margie Roscoe (her name written inside the cover) annotated the front cover, and the back cover, in black ink handwriting perfectly matching the flavor of the book, gothic and spindly just like the extensions of Peter's fingers! Margie's text appears to read: \"Whoever finds the inside of this book shall have two pence and you will...\" ??? And on reverse, again: \"Whoever finds the will give them tuppence.\" Perhaps meant as Margie as a reward for finding the beloved book and returning it to her, but perhaps Margie imagined the book itself to carry a magic of sorts, delivering fortune to those who would find it in their hands in the future. Whatever the case, feels just right to me!\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e10 1\/2\" x 8 1\/8\". 24 pages, all present.
