I just love the silhouette of this mid-sized vintage coiled basket, with that round and deep lower half offset by its dramatically sloping lid which doubles as a handle. Those striped and checkerboard patterns-- created by way of the natural dyes--are pretty great too, especially pronounced on the interior of the basket where their original saturation is preserved. I am not certain the origins of this piece, but based on color, shape, and the structure of the super tight fitting lid, I believe it to be early 20th century African. Simultaneously earthy and cheerful, it's also very nicely constructed and substantial, and large enough to be useful for stashing a bunch of things.
9 3/4" tall with lid x 8" diameter at widest. Bottom half is 5 1/2" tall. Very good vintage condition overall and structurally very sound with some scattered lost/split stitches as pictured.
