As I understand it, Maypole traditions stem from ancient European pagan and Roman festivals celebrating the goddess Flora, the return of spring, and the sun's increased warmth. They were banned by the Puritans for their pagan associations, but saw a revival in the 19th century, and became common components of May Day celebrations in this country in the later 19th and well into the 20th century. The various expressions on the faces of the children here are pretty excellent, as are their outfits, and I especially love the little boy crouched against the center post, who looks to be pouting.

8" x 5 7/8". There is a crease to lower left corner--which the photo of the reverse side makes clear. Otherwise a bit of loss to upper left corner as evident. Still shows very nicely, and just a terrific image.

https://www.criticaleyefinds.com/products/children-around-the-maypole-lovely-antique-silver-gelatin-print-c-1910s
