Betram Hartman (1882-1960) Signed Drawing of a Cat, 1942

There is an artist-dealer in Cambridge, MA from whom I've purchased a couple of C. Betram Hartman (1882-1960) drawings in the past (a couple of cats and one portrait of a Martha Graham dancer); I went back last week to scoop up this one, dated April, 1942, and stamped both by Bertram's estate and by the B. Hartman Gallery. Graphite, maybe also some charcoal, and watercolor, a very charming and loving portrait of the beloved family cat I think, and to my sensibilities just the sort of drawing one wants to live with, including perhaps, especially this time of year, as permission (encouragement!) to snuggle up and stay cozy.

Hartman studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Academy of Fine Arts Munich, and in Paris, then remained, with his wife Augusta ("Gusta"), based in New York City, where they was especially close to Gaston Lachaise and his wife Isabel Nagle Lachaise. In 1933/1934 Hartman was represented by two works in the first ever Whitney Biennial.
