(More often one sees pique inlay in the form of tiny brass pins\/nails, but here tiny brass strips inlaid side by side on the diagonal, creating a chain-like appearance.) As I understand it, a ring on the index finger historically signified noble status and certainly this feels like a snuff box fit for a queen!
