LOVE. I am not sure if this wonderful kneeling girl with long braid down her back is packing a block of snow or enraged in some other task, but this is about my favorite Inuit carving I've ever seen. My guess is that it comes from the Baker Lake region of the Kivalliq Region, in Nunavut on mainland Canada, based on stylistic similarities to other pieces I've seen, and I think it has a good amount of age. I just love its immediacy and directness and the relative crudeness of her fantastic profile, and then this very lovingly carving endless braid. To my eye just exactly right and not a thing more or less

8" long x 7 1/2" tall x 1 3/8" wide and weighs 3 1/2 pounds. The back side, which is just slightly concave, shows scratches to the surface, but if displayed this on a shelf front side facing one would never see them. There is also a hairline surface crack running along her neckline, pretty minor. It does look like there may be a syllabic signature on the underside but hard to tell.
