Wilhelm Kagel W. German MCM Orange and Brown Striped Cachepot or Planter

Regular price $58.00

This is a super sharp looking Wilhelm Kagel West German small planter or cachepot, c. 1950s-60s, incised with the WK mark on the underside. I find the combination of the form and surface decoration just perfect, and think it would be great filled with anything from a narcissus to an orchid to something leafy green.

I believe this piece is specifically by Wilhelm Kagel Jr., who had studied at the Keramische Fachschule in Höhr, took over his father's pottery, Kagel Keramische Werkstätten (1902-1988), in Partenkirchen, and developed a totally new range of hand-thrown earthenware pots, simply decorated in orange, brown, yellow, green or blue glaze. As has been written, his work has a distinctive latter day Art and Craft feel and a simple elegance that I think distinguishes it from much W. German pottery of the era.  After Wilhelm Kagel Jr’s death the studio closed 1987.

The pot has been used and shows some staining to the interior (it could probably be scrubbed some more than I have done) but the exterior is in excellent condition. 5 3/4" across at opening, 4 1/2" tall x 3 3/8" across at base.
