Inuit Soapstone Carving Of Man Carrying Seal, Signed

Sale price $50.00 Regular price $85.00

Another wonderful Inuit carving full of nuance and depth. The detailed carving of the hands and cuffs of the figure directs focus there--to his heart, really-- where he grips the seal he is carrying on his back in a manner that makes it hard to know where one ends and the other begins. For me this beautifully executed small carving carries all the gravity of a pieta, and evokes a similar feeling of reverence.

4 3/8" tall x 2 1/2" wide x 1 7/8" deep. The front of the right foot is chipped, squarely and I don't think detracts. Otherwise very good condition, with a few small dings here and there. The piece is signed Luke on the underside, which has not led me to a certain attribution. I believe the piece likely dates from the 1960s or 70s.
