There is a specific type of antique geometric pin cushion/pin keep, constructed of card/board with a different piece of colorful silk on each facet (see photos for one example--not the best but you get a sense), that is very close kin to this box; the construction, and the feel, is just the same. I'm fairly obsessed with those, but have never seen one like this, and it feels like a special present of a little sewing box to me. Very modern feeling, too, with this color blocking following the architecture of the box. All silk, with three sides cobalt blue on the exterior, punctuated with one long side of green and cream plaid, a short side of blue-gray, and the short end opposite the hinge framed in a thin, striped strip, which delineates it function as a pin cushion. Then inside pretty pinks and yellows, different on each side. Relatively simple, but to my eye quite sophisticated--and just lovely.
4" x 3" x 1 1/2" t. Good condition, color bright and strong. A bit of fraying to the silk on the interior along a couple edges, minor. Later 19th c. I believe.
