Navy Cruiser Scouting Squadron 2, c. 1930s-40s Graphite and Crayon Flying Bat Logo Drawing

Regular price $40.00

How to resist this charmer of a flying bat? Surrounded by Halloween orange to boot. As noted, this specific flying bat insignia belonged to the Navy Cruiser Scouting Squadron 2 (VCS-2), which was active during the World War II. Apparently, the use of the flying bat was first adopted in 1923 by pilots stationed at Guantanamo Bay to humorously comment on their scout aircraft, which they felt were so poorly suited for observation that the crews were practically "blind". Later, bats became a standard symbol for night-fighter and reconnaissance units due to their natural ability to navigate in the dark using sonar. I must say this one looks a bit more like a lost bat than a stealth navigator to me, which is much of why I love it!

14" x 11". Good condition, graphite and crayon/oil pastel on good weight paper.
