Arts of the Eskimo: Prints, 1975 First Edition

Regular price $50.00

I don't sell a lot of books, but when I add one to the shop it is because I think it's pretty special. Like this one, which is actually the second copy of it I've bought. Collecting Inuit art would likely be the first thing I'd do if I had the means, but as it is this gorgeous 1975 book is the next best thing, with more than 100 full page reproductions of a diverse, stunning selection of prints, dating from the late 50s to the early 70s, produced by artists from the Cape Dorset, Povungnituk, Holman, Baker Lake, and Pangnirtung regions. This is one I would keep near at hand and look at a lot!

The 240 page, cloth-covered hardback with original dustcover, and protective coven on top of that, also features artist biographies, brief notes about each print, a bibliography, and two essays, including an essay by Patrick Furneaux tracing the history and development of printmaking centers and cooperatives in the regions featured.

This particular copy has an interesting provenance. It appears to have been used as a  reference for a "Eskimo Art" exhibition at Northwest Michigan College in 1979. Inside, as I found it, is a lengthy, annotated Xerox copy of a hand-written price-list detailing many dozens of Inuit prints available, which I'll include with it--oh, how one wishes all those amazing prints were available still!

Very good condition. I have left the protective plastic cover on and photographed it as such.  There is a bit of writing on the plastic over the interior flaps of the cover as documented. 10 3/8" x 10 1/4" x 1 1/4".
