SOLD Marvelous Antique Naive Graphite Drawing with Figures and Horses and Houses

Regular price $70.00

This one is 100 percent up my alley and one of my favorite drawings I've had, fabulously weaving together people and architectures and horse-drawn carts and carriages in a way that feels both like a series of simultaneous vignettes and also like a map. I just love these rows of figures drawn in profile, most of them labelled with their names-- I'm sure each grouping representing the inhabitants of the wonderfully detailed houses they are framed below.  (What to make of this little orphan girl floating at upper right I'm not sure...maybe the artist herself?!) The drivers in their hats with their horses further animate and also give definition to the lay of the land, each moving along a road leading to a house, and one driving off the edge of the page altogether. And then "dear, dear, dear" floating around! To my eye and sensibilities, so very very good, including for how much it reveals about a young mind at work making sense of their world.

9 1/16” x 8” on a sort of light weight cardstock, printed on reverse. Overall good condition, with scattered staining and smudges, which I don't think detract.
