Man About to Hike Over Cliff c. 1880s Pencil Drawing

Regular price $45.00

This old pencil drawing is packed with semi-hidden details--I see a man's profile in the top rock, and the profile of a dog in the one to its right (and maybe also an embracing couple just underneath it), and then there is a signature and date hidden in the shrubbery at the bottom. I might guess there is some social/political commentary going on here too, as our man, a hunter I'd think-- though he also looks a bit like a soldier--appears poised to walk right up and off the cliff, unable to see the man on the other side useless pointing out her impending doom. And then a little dog, or perhaps as a goat, looking on safely from below. Seems a good metaphor for many a situation, and also a good reminder to pay attention!

11" x 8 1/2". Light foxing around the edges, a small tear along the bottom edge, and a little unevenness along the left edge, but overall good condition, with the drawing itself sharp and clear.
