My photos don't do justice to this charming drawing, which has a great, bright presence--the green of the background is a bit acidic, which makes it really pop. I just love how deeply contemplative these three fluffy cats look, two staring off into space as if contemplating the meaning of life, and then one at center looking straight at us, as if seeing into our souls! The green sets them off perfectly, and then clearly they own the blanket and basket (perhaps a picnic basket?) upon which they are posed. Great.
I found this is in Massachusetts and would guess late 19th/early 20th century. Sold as found in an old wooden frame with gilded interior edge--which I think suits it fine. Done in graphite + charcoal/pastel on natural/tan paper. My photos are not great and capture glare. In very good condition. There is a bit of minor rippling to the paper, amplified by the light conditions in which I shot it. Newer cardboard backing and wired for hanging.
