Huse\" and, below, \"10 Cents a Copy, $1 a Year.\" So, our miss Carlotta, who we knew from the other drawings was very interested in the fashions of the day, here shows yourself as a young entrepreneur! And most of these drawings include prices should one wish to order one of the outfits! I also just really like the idea of stations sending cards to one another to confirm contact\/receipt of signal—one (slow) method of communication confirming another (real time) one. This one was sent from W1PTB in Charlestown NH to W1JSH in Fairview MA in 1958. Truck gardening, or truck farming, is the growing of  crops to be harvested and transported to market elsewhere--which really developed in the U.S. in the late 19th century aided by the development of the railroads and refrigeration. From an entry about it on the \u003cmeta charset=\"utf-8\"\u003eNational Association of Watch and Clock Collectors website: The towering mechanical clock (now held in the collection of the National Clock and Watch Museum)\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e measures 11′ high and includes among its mechanical features two organ movements, 48 moving figures (J\u003cmeta charset=\"utf-8\"\u003eesus Christ, the twelve Apostles, the three Marys, Satan, Father Time, the three Ages of Man, Death, Justice, Orpheus, and Linus among them) and a type of tellurian movement (patented by Engle) that illustrates the positions of the moon, constellations, and zodiac relative to the rotating earth. The clock also indicates such things as the months, days of the week, moon phases, and tides. \u003cmeta charset=\"utf-8\"\u003eExactly on the hour the figure of Death strikes a thigh bone against the skull attached to the column. At 15, 30, and 45 minutes past the hour Father Time strikes a bell with a scythe and turns his sandglass, while the figures of Youth, Middle Age, and Old Age revolve in the arch above the clock dial. At 40 minutes past the hour a parade of Revolutionary soldiers and Molly Pitcher appear in the left tower while a barrel organ plays patriotic tunes. At 55 minutes past the hour the three Marys emerge from the central tower and the grand procession of the Apostles takes place accompanied by hymns from the barrel organ in the right tower. The soldier at the very top of the central tower maintains a constant vigil while the clock is running. I found it in Vermont this week and fell in love with it immediately; something about old nails hammered into wood in purposeful patterns really does it for me, and I really love the slightly off center arch of the tombstone top, too. The whole thing is wonderfully primitive, but invested with a lot of love and labor, and was clearly made to be played, as it clearly was. Point values for hitting various marks were written in graphite, and a metal strip encircles the whole thing, attached via fat iron nails. There was never a spring action trigger; rather, one would simply place a ball (a marble it seems most likely) in the alley at far right and I believe simply set a ball rolling, perhaps using a stitch (like a cue) to hit it. The most beautiful detail to me is the elegant tapering of the wooden strip that delineates the alley from the board of play, and then the carved out and well-worn groove where the ball\/s would be lined up before setting them in motion. At lower center is the weaving draft (pattern), with the sample of the half quilted diamond pique (matelassé) produced according to the pattern attached above. Feels like magic! And that just right in relation to the spareness of the \"Selectmen of Littleton Mass\" address against the cream of the paper, with the upside down arch of \"Mass.\" on the postmark (in the perfect font) just the right complement. (\u003cspan\u003eAgrippina Major and Minor had died by 59 CE, both in their forties, with this portrait dated to well after that period.) What I love about her, whoever she is, is how completely relatable she seems-- I can almost picture her, in the flesh, sitting on the front porch of a humble house in the summer, quietly holding her thoughts to her self...perhaps while her husband rambles on and on, or whittles away, or as she waits for him, or a teenaged child, to arrive safely home. Or perhaps she's mulling over a decision of global consequence.
