19th C. Pennsylvania Roses and Vines Watercolor on 1846 Bible Engraving

Regular price $75.00

I wouldn't usually go for a Biblical engraving--this one dating to 1846, representing a quote from Isaiah 43:2 (When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee)--but surrounded by hand-painted roses and vines, it's right up my alley, and I love the combination/juxtaposition, with the rosebuds feeling like promises of comfort indeed! Found in Pennsylvania, and though the painted flowers on it surely date to a bit later than the engraving, clearly 19th c. Feels pretty holy to me, and looking at it makes me imagine a whole Bible filled with with folk art watercolor embellishments, which I hope was the case!

10 15/16 x 8 1/2”. Some scattered foxing and stains, which feel rather right. There is a clean tear in the paper coming up about from the bottom near center about an inch, which I will stabilize with clear archival tape before sending unless you prefer I not.
