The Tin Woodman of Oz, Early Edition (First Reilly & Lee), 12 Color Plates

Sale price $45.00 Regular price $75.00

This is a very early edition of the Tin Woodman of Oz, printed I believe a couple of years after the 1918 true first edition, when publisher Reilly & Britton changed their name to Reilly & Lee. Often taken for a true first edition, this copy is in all other ways identical to the one, featuring pictorial endpapers, 12 color plates by John R. Neill, a publisher’s advertisement on back of ownership page, and wonderful illustrations throughout.

I grew up with my mother reading the entire saga of Oz books to my brother and myself, this one being the 14th in the series, and a long awaited one, Baum notes in his introduction: "I know some of you have been waiting for this story of the Tin Woodman, because many of my correspondents have asked me, time and again, 'whatever became of the Pretty Munchkin girl whom Nick Chopper was engaged to marry before the Wicked Witch enchanted his axe and he traded his fleet for tin." And so here we find here, and him, and learn about their "many thrilling adventures." Weird and wonderful and full of memorable characters.

9.25" x 7", 288 pages. Wear to top and bottom edges of the spine and cracking visible on the inside cover page (including a scotch tape repair.) Otherwise, very good condition, with clean, tight pages. There is light age toning to pages. No tears, folds or writing whatsoever.
