French Car and Motor Oil Collage with Woman's Face (Presumed c. 1930)

Regular price $75.00

Everything about this collage suggests c. 1930 to me, the era when Francis Picabia, Hannah Hoch and many others were creating collages in a similar sort of vein. Schneider, the French automobile manufacturer, went out of business in 1930, and from what I've been able to figure out, all of the other logos, for combination of car companies and motor oil manufacturers, seem right and consistent with the late time period (though it seems Vartray produced bottled water and gingerale, so perhaps its inclusion is a play on the mixing of oil and water?) Lots of ways, it seems to me, that this collage could be considered including equating various sorts of desire.

8 1/2” x 11 7/8”, collage on board. Light wear, overall very good vintage condition.
