Folk Art Chalk Drawing of Couple in Horse-Drawn Sled Signed Clair Bolic

Regular price $75.00

I’ve only turned up only one reference to any Clair Bolic at all—born in Caldwell, North Carolina with an estimated birth year of 1915, and shown as one of several sisters. This seems about right, though I’d think perhaps she moved north (there are some of other Bolics from around the same time in Pennsylvania) to a place of snowy winters, where she might have been inspired to paint this. Though I don't know for sure, I am guessing she was African American, as the couple bundled up in pink in blue riding in this sleigh appear to be, and how wonderfully cozy they, and the whole scene, looks, with even the smoke of the chimneys blowing like trails behind them!

Sold framed, as found, in a gold painted wooden frame that I think suits it fine. Framed: 8 3/4" x 6 3/4". Drawing itself measures 7 3/8" x 5 3/4". One the backside, strung with a piece of string for hanging, is written "original chalk drawing." I might guess 1930s-40s or so.
